31 August, 2017 (Tokyo) – Leading classification society ClassNK has released the second version of its Guidelines for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems. Based on the first version Guidelines released in August 2014, the latest version includes the results of joint research and testing on actual Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems.
In an effort to reduce SOx and PM emissions from ships, MARPOL Annex VI limits the maximum allowable amount of sulphur contents of fuel oil used onboard globally, as well as place stricter requirements in geographically defined Emission Control Areas (ECA). Last October it was determined that stricter global sulphur limit of 0.5% is to be started on 1 January 2020. To comply with the SOx and PM regulation, Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems, which reduce the amount of SOx and PM in ship emissions, are one method for complying with the regulations in addition to use of the compliant fuel. With growing interest in Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems installation stemming from stricter global sulphur limits, ClassNK is releasing the second version of its “Guidelines for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems”.
In addition to interpretations of the updated IMO guidelines, the second version of the Guidelines incorporates standards for installation of Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems based on findings of joint research projects which included trial testing of Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems on actual ships and design trials. The Guidelines also include requirements for obtaining class notations signifying that a ship fulfills requirements for the installation and ready of Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems.
